As a new dog owner, you may be overwhelmed with the amount of work it takes to make sure your dog is both healthy and well behaved. This article will go into detail regarding tips specific to your situation, a new dog owner, and ways that you can successfully train your dog.

Try to schedule each training session at roughly the same time each day. You want your dog to get into a pattern where he know’s it’s coming and is excited for it. If your dog is excited for it he’s much more likely to succeed, just as if humans are excited for something they’re more likely to succeed.

When you are training your doggy friend, use what is known as primary reinforcement. Primary reinforcement uses something that is inherent for the dog to love as a reward for good behavior. Primary reinforcements include using food as treats and rubbing your dog’s belly. This will teach your dog how to get something he already wants.

One tip to keep in mind when training your dog, is to be sure to never discipline your dog for bad behavior when he is ill. This will only confuse your dog and might cause him to not respond to discipline in the future. Examples of this would be, if your dog vomits or defecates in a manner that is not typical to his normal behavior.

Always use your dog’s name when issuing commands. When training your dog, it is important to be able to get and maintain their attention. Using your dog’s name when giving a command will make them focus. Use your dog’s name often. Get them used to both hearing and responding to it.

When house training your new puppy you need to follow a strict schedule. Get your puppy outside to eliminate first thing in the morning, last thing at night, and every couple of hours in between. This will help him to learn that elimination happens outside. It also prevents pee scents (which are attractive to your dog) from being in the house to begin with.

Focus on your body language when training. Dogs respond much easier to non-verbal cues. Pay attention to how they respond to different actions and facial expressions that you make to learn what affect they have on them. Keep your words short and too the point and reinforce it with bodily actions.

Be sure to be realistic about what you expect of your dog. You are not going to be able to train him overnight. It is going to take a great deal of time and hard work to get him to perform the way that you want him to. It is going to take the longest time to break the normal dog habits like barking, but it will happen if you dedicate the time to training.

In conclusion, it is essential that your dog be introduced to crate training if you plan on doing any travel with it. This will allow for airplane transportation. If you follow the tips and tricks provided in this article, you should save yourself much headache by having a dog that is prepared for travelling.

Having A Impossible Time Training Your Dog? Follow These Effective Tips

Are you tired of always having to lock up your dog when guests come over? Do you have issues leaving your dog alone, even for a quick run to the grocery store? Well, there are things that you can do to help get the obedient dog that you have always wanted to have. The following tips will help you in the process of training your dog.

When teaching a puppy basic commands, start with ’sit’. This is the easiest one for a dog to master. Hold his favorite snack just above his nose, and firmly say ’sit’. Most dogs will instinctively sit down at this point. Offer him the treat and don’t forget to praise him profusely. If he doesn’t sit, gently push his rear end towards the floor. After he has been sitting for a few seconds, give him the treat, and like before, remember to praise him.

A great tip for properly training your dog is to give your dog enough attention. Dogs thrive on social interaction with their owners. So if they do not get enough attention on a regular basis, then they will likely start performing some type of bad behavior.

Play with your dog often. In order to train your dog efficiently, it is important to develop and nurture a bond between the two of you. Make sure you are taking the time out of your day to play with your dog. It will be fun and stress-reducing for both of you.

When house training your new puppy, try hanging a string of bells on the front door. Every time you take the puppy outside to go potty, nudge the bells with the puppy’s foot. Eventually, the puppy will ring the bells on his own to go outside, saving you the frustration of missed signals.

To prevent your dog from digging in the trash, be sure he is well-fed and has plenty of toys to play with. Empty your trash regularly, and don’t put irresistible things like bones in it. Be sure to crate your dog when you go out and/or leave your trash can empty when you are gone.

If your dog is not listening while you are doing dog training, make sure that the dog is not ill. There will be no benefits to punishing your animal if it is not feeling well, and it can have very detrimental effects afterwards. If you are unable to decide if the dog is sick then contact a veterinarian for assistance.

Be consistent when training your dog. Always give commands using the same words, in the same tone of voice. Realize that your dog will not learn commands instantly. You have to show him what you want. For example, if you want him to learn to turn left and right on command when walking, you must say, “left” or “right” each time you make a turn. Eventually, your dog will get you drift!

As this article has discussed, taking care of or training a dog can be a wonderful experience. However, the dog training process can be challenging if you are not aware of the proper techniques to utilize. Apply this article’s advice and you’ll be well on your way to training your dog the right way.

Dog Training Hints For A Happy, Well-Behaved Furry Friend

Posted in Pets | Comments Off
Tagged With:

Congratulations on your new puppy! As you set off on your life together with your new best friend, I wish both of you many happy years of love, joy and togetherness.

Bringing a new dog home is always a fun and exciting time, but there is also work to be done. There is shopping of course, setting up sleeping arrangements, training as well as the dreaded job of cleaning up puppy puddles.

In this article, we’ll talk about 5 things you need to do to raise a happy, healthy puppy.

1. Crate Training Tips

I hope that you’ve planned ahead and bought a crate in advance. If you haven’t, buy one right away, because it is an essential bit of equipment. Aside from serving as a home for your dog, it is also a safe carrier, and an excellent tool for house training.

Crate training should be the first thing you do with your pup. Not only will the crate help him settle into his new environment, it will also be used later to house train the dog.

2. Vaccinations

It is extremely important to have your puppy vaccinated against common canine diseases. Many of these diseases are fatal to a young dog with an underdeveloped immune system, so follow your vet’s recommendations.

3. House Training

Many people will tell you to start potty training immediately, but this is counterproductive. Your pup will likely be overwhelmed and frightened by his new surroundings and in this situation any form of training will be ineffective.

So, for the first two weeks, focus on crate training, which is easy as it involves no instructions and taps into natural canine behavior.

After two weeks the puppy will be settled into his new home and you can now begin potty training. Actually, if you started with crate training, as recommended, the puppy will have more-or-less house trained himself by now.

4. Socialization

Socialization is important in teaching your puppy how to interact with other people and animals. It also teaches him that not everyone outside the family is an enemy. Allow your pup to meet as many people as possible. Also let him get used to other family pets, but always do the introductions with the puppy on a leash.

5. Bonding Through Play

There’s a lot to remember when raising a pup, but amongst all of this don’t forget to enjoy the experience. Playing games with your pup is a whole lot of fun and also an excellent way of bonding with your dog. Also use play time to gently correct aggression and biting behaviors.

Yes, puppies can be a lot of work. They can be time consuming and at times they can try your patience. But they’re also an absolute joy to have around. Their puppyhood passes so fast and before you know it that little bundle of fur will be a strapping adult dog. If you followed the advice in this article he will also be a happy, healthy and well-mannered dog.

Five Useful Tips For First Time Puppy Guardians

Posted in Pets | Comments Off

Training your dog is not as difficult as you may think. It is easy to build a solid, firm foundation of mutual respect and love with your canine companion. Establish trust with your dog and he or she is sure to value your standing as the pack leader that you are.

When you go out with your dog, be courteous. When passing other dogs on the sidewalk, make sure that your dog cannot make contact with the other dog without both owners agreeing to it. This is a great way to avoid unintentional aggression between dogs, since you never know what an unfamiliar dog is like.

Just because your dog is obeying you, do not assume that they are done learning. Your dog is always learning. Never stop reinforcing good behavior. This is especially important if you move. A new surrounding can be very distracting for a dog. You might have to reteach them a great deal.

Don’t spend hours a day training your dog, especially when it comes to tricks. It is most effective to practice every day, but spend no more than 10 to 15 minutes per session. This ensures that your dog doesn’t get bored and lose interest. Just be sure to reward your dog for good performance and he will be a trickster in no time.

Target training can serve as a basis for more advanced tricks. Target training is teaching your dog to touch an object (the target) with his nose or paw. The object can be any item, but once you pick something to use (some trainers use a ball mounted on the end of a stick), stick to it consistently. Once your dog has learned to target the object, you can shape his behavior by placing the object near the next task you want him to learn. Targeting can be used to teach a dog to do everything from closing doors to turning the light switch on or off.

Some dogs have enormous reserves of energy that can cause the dog to act crazy through out the day. For dogs like this a fenced in yard or electric collar fence can be a useful tool to allow the dog to run around in a contained area. The dog will have more exercise and be more relaxed when it comes inside.

Take everything that your friends and family members say about your training program with a grain of salt. Everyone will have their own opinions about how you should help your pet learn to follow directions. Ignore most of it and do what you know is best for you and your pet.

It is important to keep your dog training sessions short, it is better to have three ten minute sessions than one thirty minute session. Your dog is not a human and they will tend to lose interest quickly, by making sessions shorter you will make more progress in your training efforts.

If you want to get started in dog training, you have to start with a great deal of information so you can best understand what your dog is going to respond to. All dogs are different, and all can be a bit difficult to train if you aren’t using the right tips, such as these found in this article.

Good Dogs Are The Result Of Reliable Training

How To Train Your Dog

Every dog should have some sort of training to help correct poor behaviors and to adapt to their new living environment. This article has some helpful advice on how to train your dog.

While it is possible to train many types of dogs together, depending on their personality, it may be impossible if you have two dogs. Try, when you train your dog, training your dogs independently if you find them losing concentration during group training.

Be consistent with your cues when training a dog. Dogs respond much better to this because dogs will associate a specific word or action with that particular type of behavior. It is very important to be consistent. The more consistent you are, the faster your dog will catch on.

A harness will be more comfortable for you dog, although you will lose some of the control a collar will give you. Used properly, a harness combined with a collar can help teach your dog to properly heel and obey you while wearing a harness.

Associate a word with an action and stick to it. Training sessions achieve better results when a dog is able to connect a certain word or action to a behavior. Always remember that it is extremely beneficial to your training sessions if you remain consistent. If you strive for this, you and your pet will get more out of the training.

Your dog needs to stay active during all phases of his life. Dogs were not meant to lay around all day. Dogs need to run around and do activities with their owners to be at their best. Look for a local agility class, go for a run with your dog or teach him to play catch with a Frisbee. A dog that doesn’t run gets bored and lethargic. Your dog needs to get exercise.

Keep tabs on the number of treats you give to your dog as a reward in order to avoid making him gain weight. Many people overlook treats when considering the animal’s diet, but they certainly add up, especially during active training.

Chewing the wrong items is a habit for many puppies. This requires immediate attention when it happens. Redirecting your puppy towards a chew toy teaches him what is appropriate to chew on. This can prevent further damage to your possessions.

If certain things trigger bad behavior in your dog, keep him occupied whenever you pass something that will tempt him to misbehave. For example, if it is difficult for your dog to be around other animals, you should distract him with praise and entertainment in order to keep him preoccupied when you walk past animals during your walks. You will see that your dog will have a better relationship with other dogs if you do this.

Your dog will learn if you keep it up and give him rewards. Perform the same training session every day with immediate rewards. That is how dogs are able to grasp tricks. Dogs learn through repetition and reinforcement.

You do not want to over-stress your new pup by trying to teach him too much too quickly. Your puppy has a very short attention span, so start out with short sessions, and try to keep things enjoyable for both you and your pup. You want to end the session on a positive note; if you push too hard, he will end up dreading your training sessions.

Don’t play tug-of-war with your puppy if you want a successful training relationship. In addition to tug-of-war, games that involve wresting something away from your puppy or chasing each other in any respect, can entice the animal to bite or nip at your hands. These are games you don’t want to play with them until they are a little older and more mature so they don’t get used to the bad behavior of nipping.

As soon as you get your puppy, the first thing to teach him/her is their name; this will help build a bond between animal and human. Always refer to your dog by his name, and begin teaching him to come anytime it is called. These are the commands your dog should learn before anything else. Make sure to spend time with your dog in order for him to learn and trust you. This will help them become more receptive to harder training later.

Every puppy in training will make some mistakes in the potty department. Clean accidents up immediately to assist in your training efforts. Animals are inclined to eliminate repeatedly in spots where they can smell urine or feces, and carpets require special care. Buy a product specially designed to neutralize odors.

When training your dog, always be sure that it feels safe. Insecure dogs are more likely to engage in bad behaviors or to lash out unexpectedly. To eliminate this possibility, make sure your dog is in a safe place.

Dogs need to be taught the right habits as soon as they are brought to your home. It is far simpler to teach a dog to do something the right way than to break bad habits. If you don’t want your dog to be constantly begging for food when you are at the table, don’t feed it food scraps in the first place.

The majority of reported dog bites were brought about by fear. This is common behavior for a dog that feels as if he is trapped, threatened, or scared. Never use force to train your dog. If you do this, you may get bitten. By doing this, pleasing you will be one of your dog’s life goals as it will see you as the pack leader.

Consistency is one of the most important requirements for effective dog training. Make a list of all your commands, and ensure that anyone who might have to control your dog has this list. Anyone needing to handle your dog should follow the same program, using reward for good behavior and taking care to never reward bad behavior. Your dog will understand what is required if everyone involved uses the same approach.

When training a puppy to use a crate it is important to take your time and start with only a few steps at a time. When they are comfy with the open door, try closing it and feeding them treats via the wires. Keep them in the crate for a small duration and slowly increase that duration. If your pet seems upset or agitated, you may need to slow down.

The majority of pet owners are pleasantly surprised to find out that training their dog to learn basic commands is a process that takes only a short amount of time each day and fits smoothly into their lifestyle. Moreover, they are often astonished at how quickly their dog begins to respond to the commands. Consider giving some of the ideas outlined above a try, in order to improve the bond between you and your dog.

Tips And Tricks To Living With A Well-Behaved Dog

You plan on raising your dog to be a show dog and need to know all of the tips and tricks to be successful. This article will go into depth with all of the things you need to do to be sure that you are training your show dog correctly.

One tip to keep in mind when training your dog, is to use its name properly. This is important because control over your pet is the number one priority in training and discipline. Say it’s name often, but only for direct orders. Never call your dog to you if you plan on inflicting punishment on it.

Stay away from high end training devices like shock collars. They often don’t function as well as advertised and are far more expensive than conventional training methods. Plus, using devices like shock collars can stifle your dog and discourage even good behavior. In general, using such techniques produces negative effects.

It is easier to train a dog if you reward him. When training your dog, reinforce good behavior with praise. As he is learning a new command, reward him with positive reinforcements, such as games and walks. The golden rule to follow is that the good behavior produces the reward and not the reward produces the good behavior.

If you want to be successful at dog obedience training, you must be willing to commit to a specific amount of time on a consistent basis. Dogs learn from repetition and consistency. Additionally, the very act of spending a certain amount of time with your dog every day will convince him that you are a consistent and reliable person. These are two qualities that will work to make you the leader of the pack!

Don’t let your dog ‘own’ the furniture. To a bossy dog, the furniture is his fortress, giving him much more status than sitting on the floor. If your dog becomes possessive about the furniture, deny him access until he is ready to move for any human being, including a child or stranger. Stand with an erect posture and use a firm voice. Don’t use food to entice your dog off the furniture if he has already growled, as he will think he has been rewarded. Wait until he gets off the furniture on his own, and don’t allow him back up.

When choosing a new dog for your household, it is a good idea to do some research on different breeds of dogs. This will help you find some that are suited for you and your lifestyle so the dog can be a part of your family for many years to come.

One tip to keep in mind when training your dog, is that your timing and the expected timing of your dog’s actions are essential. This is important because this is one learning aspect that is common to all dogs. While different dogs require different teaching methods, timing is a communication method that will help you find success no matter what you try.

Hopefully with the knowledge you just acquired about training your dogs you’re feeling more confident with ways you can do just that. The information you learned here is good but remember that there’s always more to learn, so keep on the lookout for new information and apply it whenever you can and you should see results soon.

How To Train Your Dog Properly By Following These Tricks

FIDO a little too feisty? Are you furry best friend really more of a nightmare? It is important to implement dog training as early as possible for dogs. When you establish strict, consistent rewards and punishments for your pup early on, good behavior will follow. Here are a few training tips to get your dog on the right path.

When you are working on dog training, make sure that you are providing him or her with the right balance of food. Imagine if you were eating foods such as turkey or sugar while you are trying to learn, as you can see it would definitely have an influence on your attention factor. The same principles apply to dog training. Stick with foods that will compliment your dog’s natural ability to learn.

When training your pooch, patience is a virtue. All dogs learn at their own pace, and getting frustrated with your pet often adds to the dog’s confusion. Avoid punishing your dog for misbehavior and offer rewards for good behavior instead. Dogs love treats, but you can also reinforce the desired behavior with love and affection.

In order to potty train your dog, it is important to praise them when they are successful at going outside. Dogs are more likely to continue their good behavior if they know they will get praise afterward. Tell them what a good dog they are, and give them a hug and kiss.

When house training your new puppy, try hanging a string of bells on the front door. Every time you take the puppy outside to go potty, nudge the bells with the puppy’s foot. Eventually, the puppy will ring the bells on his own to go outside, saving you the frustration of missed signals.

If your dog suffers from separation anxiety and gets restless when you are about to leave the house, you should feed your dog right before you leave. This will keep your dog busy while you prepare and distract it from the stressful situation. This should make the separation much easier.

To stop your dog from jumping up on you, push him back firmly with your knee and tell him “NO” in a firm and commanding voice. As soon as his feet are on the floor, pet him with your hands and praise him for being a good dog with his feet on the floor.

Shy dogs benefit from re-socializing. Oftentimes, dogs have behavioral incidents with certain situations, certain people or other dogs, that go unnoticed by us. We might not realize, but these interactions have given our dogs a sour taste about these circumstances. Re-socializing your dog to the stimuli he’s upset by, can help him overcome his anxiety.

Use the ’shake-can’ method of training. Put a few coins in an empty soda can and seal it. When your dog misbehaves, shake the can once. It will startle the dog, and halt his behavior. Once you do this a few times, your dog will start to realize that his behavior is unacceptable. Only shake the can once, if you do it multiple times your dog will desensitize.

Having a well behaved dog makes all the difference when it comes to your pet experience. Disobedient pets tend to make a mess of our lives and our schedules. This article has given you some great tips to make your family pet an appreciated and loved member of the family.

Excellent Tips To Make Dog Training Easier

Training your dog can be a delightful, rewarding experience for both of you. Training doesn’t need to be time-intensive, particularly if you’re addressing issues in small steps and creating manageable goals. This article will outline several small but savvy techniques that can turn small problems into big success for you and your dog.

Stay away from high end training devices like shock collars. They often don’t function as well as advertised and are far more expensive than conventional training methods. Plus, using devices like shock collars can stifle your dog and discourage even good behavior. In general, using such techniques produces negative effects.

Do not use training or aids that involve excessive (or even regular) punishment to your dog, as the cost may far outweigh the benefits. Prong collars can cause issues with the trachea in susceptible breeds while simultaneously using negative means of reinforcing heeling. You should be both knowledgeable about and comfortable with whatever training and/or aids you use.

Make sure that when your dog does something correctly or when they just happen to act in a favorable manner that they are properly rewarded. Rewards can increase good behavioral changes. Try allowing your dog a treat or a new toy when they act in a favorable manner. They will eventually keep doing it.

When properly training your dog, you should never use food as the sole source of control over a particular type of behavior. Food is a necessity that dogs must have in order to survive, so they need other sources of rewards. In addition to giving good, you should pet your dog and give it praise.

Pick the proper size crate for your dog if you want to be able to effectively use the crate to train them. Remember, puppies grow up. Pick a crate that will be of suitable size for the adult when the puppy matures. The dog should have plenty of room to turn around and lie down without being crowded.

Set goals for training your dog. Decide what time of day you will work with your dog and how long you will work. Decide exactly what you want to work on, and be consistent. Work on the same things, in the same way, at the same time every day until mastered. Once you have accomplished one goal, build on it by adding something new. Don’t skip around or be inconsistent. This is confusing for your dog.

It’s easy to let your dog run free when you bring him home for those first few weeks, only to want to later correct behaviors when they aren’t adorable anymore. Avoid communication breakdown by starting your training schedule immediately with your new dog, so he has the right idea from the start.

As was alluded to earlier, dogs are great companions, either as simple pets or for specific uses. Now that you have read this article, you know a few things about training your dog to do the things you want but not other things you don’t. Keep these tips in mind and make your pet relationship a happy one.
