How important is the choice of your dog food? Most people don’t know how to read the ingredients list nor do they understand what they really mean.
While doing research on possible cause for dog seizures I started to investigate dog food ingredients.. What I found out was both amazing and scary, so I immediately started a crusade to educate pet owners around the world.
You can be at ease, I’m not going to try and sell you some high priced cure all healthy dog food. What I will do is show you how to pick the correct dog food based on knowing what the ingredients really are.
What would you say if I told you that just by feeding your dog correctly you could add over eight years to its life? How great would it be to have eight more years of tail wagging unconditional love from your loved one?
It took me many hours of research, but I did find a book that explained how to decode the secret language used on dog food labels. While it is true the FDA regulates dog food labeling, it does not use the same standards it uses for food prepared for people..
The FDA’s weak regulations of dog food labeling have made it easy for the pet food industry to hide unhealthy ingredients that they use to make the food more attractive to dogs so that they’ll eat it. Some of these ingredients are actually deadly over the long term for your dogs. The pet food industry is allowed to twist with meaning of words and this makes it nest ti impossible for the pet owner to understand what is really in their pets food..
The difference between a dog food named Beef Dog Food and Beef Flavored Dog Food is that the first would contain around 70% beef (of some kind) and the second could contain 0% beef of any kind.
Another way they are allowed to play with words is, if the use the words “with, Dinner or Nuggets” they only need to contain 3% of that ingredient in the food.
Watching dog food commercials you would think that they only use quality meat, but in reality most foods contain byproducts marked unfit for human consumption.
Some companies in the commercial pet food industry are adding waste leftovers from human food processing plants to add protein to their dog foods. We could not eat these by-products so why would we want to feed it to our dogs?
Sometimes it seems like the FDA is in bed with the dog food industry with these weak regulations that allow the industry to list toxic ingredients using words that sound healthy. Everyone knows that eggs are a healthy source of protein and would be good to feed our dogs. So when you see an ingredient listed as Dried Egg Products that would be a healthy ingredient for your dog. The problem is this is a waste by-product from the egg industry that is not fit for human consumptions but legally sold as a dog food ingredient.
You would be surprised the number of healthy sounding ingredients listed on dog food labels that are actually toxic waste.
The deception of the dog food labeling laws has forced me into transitioning my dogs to a homemade dog food. I do understand that this is not feasible for all pet owners, but it does underscore the need for them to alt least learn how to properly interpret a dog food label. The link below will take you to a website that I found that will explain every word listed on the label of the dog food you are using.
